We have so many wonderful singers that we celebrate from around the world. Our neighbor, Canada, has produced many of them. This month of April, we will acknowledge a few beginning with Sarah McLachlan.
Sarah was born on January 28, 1968 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada as Sarah Ann McLachlan. She is known for her smile, red hair, and long dresses when performing her somber ballads with deeply personal lyrics. She is known for her Irish ballads, often mistaken for someone who had been raised in Ireland.
Sarah has been playing instruments, including the piano and guitars, since the age of 5. The first instrument she learned to play was the ukulele. She started Lilith Fair, the first all-female performer concert tour, touring North America, which lasted 3 summers from 1997 to 1999. At the age of 17, Sarah was the first artist signed to Nettwerk recording label.
Sarah was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on October 21, 1999 for her services to music and charities. She was nominated for a 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song “Fallen”. Her other albums include: Touch (1988) Solace (1991) Live (1992) Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1993) The Freedom Sessions (1994) Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff (1996) Surfacing (1997) Mirrorball (1999) Remixed (2001) Afterglow (2003).
